Dr. Francis J. Bean is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery in foot and ankle surgery. For over 28 years, he has performed over 20,000 varied, complicated and unique surgical procedures and countless medical treatments for patients of various ages from all over the US, including:
Dr. Bean possesses numerous post-residency, continuous training certifications—completed on location at various hospitals nationwide—in all facets of foot and ankle surgical and medical treatments. Among those are the following:

- Ankle and Foot Sports Medicine
- Ankle Replacement Surgery
- Diabetic Foot and Ankle Salvage procedures
Dr. Bean possesses numerous post-residency, continuous training certifications—completed on location at various hospitals nationwide—in all facets of foot and ankle surgical and medical treatments. Among those are the following:
- Certification in STAR total ankle replacement, 2011 (one of first 22 in US)
- External Fixators and Frames, 2007
- Buechel-Pappas Total Ankle Replacement, 2004
- Certification in AO-ASIF techniques, 1987
- Arthroscopic Surgical Techniques, 1983
- Laser Surgical (YAG) Techniques, 1983
Dr. Bean attended the St. Anselm College for his undergraduate work where he obtained his Bachelors degree in Biology (Pre-Med). He then attended medical school at the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, IL where he received his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine.
Dr. Bean began his residency as the sole surgical resident for 30 attending podiatric surgeons at Westview Hospital, Indianapolis, IN. In the early 1980s, few podiatric surgeons were qualified to perform BOTH foot AND foot & ankle surgical procedures, and qualifies for these by performing BOTH open and closed foot and ankle procedures. During this he performed over 800 surgical procedures and was amongst the first podiatric surgeons to perform ankle athroscopy in Indiana.
Dr. Bean enjoys participating in open-wheel racing (Formula Ford 2000 and IndyCar), snow and water sports, competitive rowing, kickboxing, salsa dancing and hockey. His understanding of athletic performance is certainly an asset in treating his patient/athletes.
